Plaster is the finish pools were born with: white marble dust and cement, trowelled smooth. It is the cheapest way to make a pool look new and the one that needs doing again soonest.

What it is like to stand on
- Underfoot
- Smooth the whole way round. There is nothing to feel with your feet and nothing to catch a toe on.
- Wet, on the steps
- The slipperiest of the three wet. Most people want a hand on the rail on the steps.
- In the sun
- Bright white plaster is the coolest surface here. Choosing a dark colour gives that away.
- After ten years
- Etches. The smooth goes chalky and slightly rough underfoot, and that roughness is usually the sign it is due.

Asked about plaster
Why does plaster last less time than pebble?
It is softer, and Florida water is aggressive. Chemistry kept in range gets you the ten years; neglect gets you seven.
Can plaster be a colour?
Yes. Grey, blue and a warm tan are the common ones. Colour costs a little more and hides mottling better than white.
How soon can we swim?
The pool refills the day the plaster goes on. Brushing twice a day for two weeks, and no heater for the first month.
