Quartz is plaster with crushed quartz in it. Same smooth feel, a fleck of colour, and a surface that shrugs off the chemistry that stains plain plaster. It is the middle choice and the one most people end up with.

What it is like to stand on
- Underfoot
- Smooth, the same as plaster. The fleck is in the mix rather than under your feet.
- Wet, on the steps
- A shade more grip than plain plaster wet. Not enough to change how you use the steps.
- In the sun
- Follows the colour you pick. The mid blues and greys sit between the other two.
- After ten years
- Holds its colour and its surface. Of the three it is the one that shows its age least.

Asked about quartz
Does quartz feel rough?
No. It is trowelled smooth like plaster. The fleck is in the mix, not on the surface.
Which colours are there?
Whites, blues and greys, with the fleck in a lighter or darker tone. Darker mixes make the water look deeper.
Is quartz worth the extra over plaster?
Over ten years, usually yes. It costs about a third more and lasts about half as long again.
